Health rebalance, accessibility settings and bug fixes

Health rebalance

I felt like the original health system didn’t make it very easy to gauge how much health you had left and how much damage you would take from enemies and falling into pits, so I’ve now introduced a classic heart-based system.

  • You start with 3 hearts
  • Punches deal 1 point of damage to enemies
  • Falling into pits will damage you by a half-heart
  • Enemies have been rebalanced too:
    • Walkers have 3 HP and deal a half-heart of damage
    • Rollers have 2 HP and deal 1 heart of damage
    • Watchers have 1 HP and deal a half-heart of damage
    • What’s the deal with these dumb names

Since this could make early game a bit harder than before, I’ve scattered some health upgrades throughout the level. As an example:

Color vision deficiency modes

Yesterday it occurred to me that this game’s signature ability relies on being able to distinguish between yellow and blue platforms. Although I think colors in-game already have decent contrast, I’ve decided to add the option to enable color correction for people with color vision deficiencies! Now the game lets you choose between deuteranopia, protanopia and tritanopia, alongside a slider to set the color correction strength.

Bug fixes and unimportant stuff

  • Fixed the game crashing when using the legacy wall jump (thanks SolarPellets!)
  • (V1.1.2) Fixed camera sensitivity and FOV settings not applying correctly when modifying them during gameplay
  • (V1.1.2) Tweaked one room for better enemy placement
  • Added dithering, depth error and mesh distance shaders (I need to stop butchering the graphics)
  • Disabled occlusion culling since it made the graphics very glitchy with the new shaders enabled. I hope this doesn’t murder performance for other people…
  • Stuff that I keep forgetting

If you’re curious to see the game in action, check out this video by HurricaneOf87 showcasing the jam build!

I swear this is the last update I’m making, barring other hotfixes. Again, see you for MVM23!
